Most individuals do not take into consideration that water damage can occur to them until it is too late.  Fortunately if you do the proper amount of maintenance you can help limit the risks associated with water damage.

If you are on a septic system at your home or business doing a monthly inspection is a good idea.  The reason you want to do this is because if something is wrong you will be able to catch it in time to prevent a sewage backup.  Once this happens you are dealing with a toxic mess that will require the assistance of professionals.  It is also a good idea to know where the water shutoff valve is so it can be turned off in the event you have a problem.

Another area to keep an eye on is the walls of your home.  If you notice what appears to be water damage you could have a broken pipe that needs to be repaired.

Finally, do not ignore the hoses  that feed your washing machine with water.  These hoses are under constant pressure and should be replaced from time to time as they age.  If they were to leak it will cause a mess very quickly in your home.
